Trailer Insurance in Texas
Your tow vehicle's liability follows a trailer while it's hitched — but nothing pays to replace the trailer itself, or the contents inside it, when it's stolen out of a driveway. Texas trailer insurance covers utility, cargo, enclosed, dump, horse, and boat trailers on the road and parked.
What trailer coverage includes
- Physical damage to the trailer, hitched or parked
- Theft and vandalism, including from a job site or driveway
- Cargo and contents coverage on enclosed and cargo trailers
- Horse trailers with living quarters and tack coverage
- Utility, dump, flatbed, and boat trailer options

Trailer insurance FAQs
Do I have to insure a trailer in Texas?
Texas doesn't require separate trailer insurance, and your tow vehicle's liability extends to the trailer while it's attached. What it doesn't do is pay for the trailer itself — so if losing it would hurt, insure it.
How much is trailer insurance?
Small utility trailers often cost $50–$150 a year to cover. Enclosed cargo and dump trailers usually run $200–$500, and horse trailers with living quarters can go higher based on value.
Does trailer insurance cover what's inside the trailer?
Only if you add contents or cargo coverage — the base policy covers the trailer as property. For tools, equipment, or tack, that add-on is usually where the real exposure sits.
